I "THOUGHT" I knew what I was doing and considered myself an experienced traveler.... until I went to Italy this summer.
I have a lot to say about packing. Let's talk about essential packing tips that will help you prepare for your adventure within your comfort level.

TRAVEL GEAR
Are you comfortable with "just a carry-on" for 1+ weeks overseas? That's not me and that's not how I'm presenting my tips. After returning from an international trip this summer, here are the items I found to work well for me:
Suitcase: This was my first try for "hard side" luggage. I loved the ease of rolling! Because I was only packing for myself, I took the middle-size bag on this trip.
Luggage locks: be sure to go with TSA approved!
Apple AirTags - Luckily I didn't have to track any bags down but all the experts say you need these!
Topics for consideration:
Depending on your class of ticket or your airline loyalty perks, you may be eligible for free checked bag(s). Be aware of that before you decide what size and how many bags to pack. Also, will you have to lug your bags around cobblestone streets in Italy by yourself, or will you be traveling with the option of baggage handling assistance?
Think ahead before you pack. Will you have room in your bag for shopping and to bring souvenirs and gifts home? Will you be shipping home purchases direct from the shops?
Let's Talk About Your Carry-On...
Have you actually used your carry on before? Or did you just purchase it and haven't thought through the pros and cons? On this last trip, I traveled with my mom. We both had new bags with less that ideal results.
I chose a backpack that was a bit on the small side. This limited my ability to bring everything I wanted, but it was easy to manage as an under-seat bag.
My mom used a new roller bag. Though the size was appropriate, getting it around the airport was a struggle. It only had 2 wheels and was more of the drag-behind-you bag. This became extremely awkward for fast moving moments when she had to roll that and her checked bag at the same time. This style bag is also not great in very crowded environments. I'm NOT including a link for this reason.

Understand Your Destination
Before you even think about packing, take some time to research your destination. Understanding the climate, culture, and activities available will help you determine what to bring. Here are some key points to consider:
Climate: Check the weather forecast for your travel dates. If you're heading to a tropical location, lightweight clothing is essential. Conversely, if you're visiting a colder region, layering is key.
Cultural Norms: Some cultures have specific dress codes. For example, if you're visiting religious sites, you may need to dress modestly. Researching these norms can save you from uncomfortable situations.
Activities: Are you planning to hike, swim, or attend formal events? Your itinerary will dictate what you need to pack. Make a list of activities and pack accordingly.
Create a Packing List
A packing list is your best friend when it comes to organizing your luggage. Start by categorizing items into sections:
Clothing: List out the number of outfits you’ll need, considering the duration of your trip and the activities planned. Include essentials like underwear, socks, and sleepwear.
Toiletries: Don’t forget your toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and any other personal care items. If you're traveling internationally, check if your products are available at your destination.
Electronics: Make sure to pack your phone, charger, camera, and any other gadgets you might need. Consider bringing a portable charger for long days out.
Documents: Keep your passport, travel insurance, tickets, and any necessary visas in a secure, easily accessible location.
Pack Smart
Packing efficiently can save you space and make it easier to find what you need. Here are some strategies to consider:
Roll Your Clothes: Rolling clothes instead of folding them can save space and reduce wrinkles. This method also allows you to fit more into your suitcase.
Use Packing Cubes: These handy organizers can help you separate clothing by category, making it easier to find what you need without rummaging through your entire suitcase.
Limit Shoes: Shoes can take up a lot of space. Aim to bring no more than three pairs: one for everyday wear, one for formal occasions, and one for specific activities like hiking or swimming.
Be Mindful of Weight Limits
Airlines often impose strict weight limits on luggage. To avoid excess baggage fees, weigh your suitcase before heading to the airport. Here are some tips to keep your luggage light:
Wear Bulky Items: If you're bringing a heavy jacket or boots, wear them during your flight to save space in your luggage.
Minimize Toiletries: Instead of bringing full-sized bottles, transfer your toiletries into smaller containers. Many travel stores sell reusable travel-sized bottles.
Leave Non-Essentials Behind: Be realistic about what you need. If you’re unsure about an item, it’s better to leave it behind.
Prepare for Security Checks
Navigating airport security can be a hassle, but being prepared can make the process smoother. Here are some tips:
Pack Smartly: Keep your electronics and liquids easily accessible. Most airports require you to remove these items from your bag during security checks.
Know the Rules: Familiarize yourself with the TSA guidelines regarding liquids, gels, and prohibited items. This knowledge can save you time and frustration.
Wear Easy-to-Remove Shoes: Slip-on shoes can make the security process quicker. Avoid shoes with complicated laces or buckles.
So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your next trip and make unforgettable memories!
